Choosing the Right Heat Pump for Your Room

Comfortable living space with air conditioning suited to the room size and layout

Walk into any showroom and the wall of heat pump boxes looks much the same — yet the difference between the right unit and the almost-right one shows up every day on your power bill and in how the room feels. Capacity, placement and a handful of practical details decide whether a system quietly disappears into the background or becomes a daily annoyance. Here is how to think it through.

Start with the room, not the catalogue

Capacity follows room volume and heat loss, not floor area alone. A small, well-insulated bedroom with one external wall needs far less grunt than a high-stud, open-plan living area with ranch sliders on two sides. As a rough starting point, measure length, width and ceiling height, note the window sizes and which way they face, and check the insulation in ceiling and underfloor. North-facing glass pours in free winter warmth; big south-facing windows leak it. A proper design assessment weighs all of this — which is why we recommend one before buying, especially for large or awkward spaces.

Bigger is not better

It is tempting to buy up a size "just in case", but oversized units short-cycle: they blast the room to temperature, switch off, then kick back on minutes later. That stop-start pattern wastes power, wears components faster, dehumidifies poorly in summer and feels draughty. Undersized units have the opposite problem — running flat-out on cold mornings without ever catching up. The sweet spot is a unit that cruises at part load most of the time and still has headroom for the coldest week of winter.

Placement decides comfort

Where the indoor unit sits matters as much as its size. Mount it where air can wash across the room — usually on an external wall, high up, with a clear throw across the space and no sofa, curtain or bookshelf directly underneath deflecting the stream. Avoid pointing the main airflow straight at where people sit for hours; gentle, even circulation beats a jet of warm air in the face. Bedrooms deserve extra thought about noise: check the low-fan decibel rating and keep the unit away from directly above the pillow end of the bed.

Features worth paying for, and ones to skip past

Wi-Fi control and weekly timers earn their keep — warming the house before you arrive home beats heating an empty building all day. Good filtration matters in a city with winter woodsmoke and spring pollen. Plasma or deodorising filters, quiet "sleep" modes and occupancy sensors are all genuinely useful in the right room. What matters less than brochures suggest is the headline efficiency number alone: a correctly sized, well-placed mid-range unit will outperform a premium flagship that was guessed into the wrong room.
